Zoo photographs

These are some images that I have taken during the first year of my photography course at Dudley Zoo. I enjoyed this project because I learnt a variety of camera techniques and ways of photographing animals. The group I was in came second in a collaborative competition project with students from Graphic Design for poster design.

This isn't my best image of a wallaby, but I wanted to include it to offer variety to my portfolio. I like the coloured leaves surrounding the wallaby, as it gives an autumnal feel to the photograph.
This image was taken in the grounds of Dudley Zoo, my aim was to capture Dudley Castle with some greenery also. I then noticed a meerkat on the left hand side of the image, and decided to try and capture it as well. I think it looks effective because it shows how visible the castle is from the zoo, and gives a good background view.
This is another photograph I have taken of the meerkats at Dudley Zoo. I like this photograph because it shows a group of meerkats unposed, and one in particular in the lookout position. I think this a natural image and not posed by the meerkats.
This photograph of a Lemur is an extreme close up and I had to zoom in a lot to be able to achieve the shot. This Lemur has different colour eyes to the other Lemurs, as they are bright yellow and the others are red.
I was pleased with this photograph of a meerkat because it makes the meerkat look powerful and in control, as the rock is providing height for the meerkat like a platform.
I enjoyed photographing meerkats because they also have fun personalities, and they are excellent to capture, even though it is hard to get them to remain still. The aperture on this photograph is wide because the meerkat is in focus and the background is blurred.
Another photograph of a lemur, I experimented with different angles here by shooting upwards. The lighting was natural, although it was taken in october so the weather was a bit dull.
This photograph of a Lemur was one of my final images, as the aim was to photograph an endangered species and achieve the best possible outcome. I chose the Lemurs because they were easily accessible thanks to a walkway that led through their enclosure, and I enjoyed photographing them and seeing their personalities develop as well as learning more about the species.
This marked the beginning of my zoo project and the zoo journey that lasted several months. The aim of this project was to take a number of suitable photographs that could be turned into posters by graphic design students.
