Analysis by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) suggests delays in achieving net zero emissions, or a temperature increase of more than 1.5°C, will necessitate even stronger action: net negative emissions. A very large-scale opportunity for carbon sequestration would include yet unproven ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies (Rogelj et al., 2018).
Understanding and sustainably managing complex environments such as marine ecosystems benefits fr... more Understanding and sustainably managing complex environments such as marine ecosystems benefits from an integrated approach to ensure that information about all relevant components and their interactions at multiple and nested spatiotemporal scales are considered. This information is based on a wide range of ocean observations using different systems and approaches. An integrated approach thus requires effective collaboration between areas of expertise in order to improve coordination at each step of the ocean observing value chain, from the design and deployment of multi-platform observations to their analysis and the delivery of products, sometimes through data assimilation in numerical models. Despite significant advances over the last two decades in more cooperation across the ocean observing activities, this integrated approach has not yet been fully realized. The ocean observing system still suffers from organizational silos due to independent and often disconnected initiatives...
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a powerful greenhouse gas and a key catalyst of stratospheric ozone deplet... more Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a powerful greenhouse gas and a key catalyst of stratospheric ozone depletion. Yet, little data exist about the sink and source terms of the production and reduction of N2O outside the well-known oxygen minimum zones (OMZ). Here we show the presence of functional marker genes for the reduction of N2O in the last step of the denitrification process (nitrous oxide reductase genes; nosZ) in oxygenated surface waters (180-250 O2 μmol.kg-1) in the south-eastern Indian Ocean. Overall copy numbers indicated that nosZ genes represented a significant proportion of the microbial community, which is unexpected in these oxygenated waters. Our data show strong temperature sensitivity for nosZ genes and reaction rates along a vast latitudinal gradient (32°S-12°S). These data suggest a large N2O sink in the warmer Tropical waters of the south-eastern Indian Ocean. During a zooplankton survey 350 km off the coast of Western Australia, we captured a large and ro... more During a zooplankton survey 350 km off the coast of Western Australia, we captured a large and robust zooid of a salp (Thetys vagina), to which six late stage larvae (phyllosomata) of the western rock lobster (Panulirus cygnus) were attached. High-throughput sequencing analyses of DNA extracts from midgut glands of the larvae confirmed that each phyllosoma had consumed mainly salp tissue (x¯ = 64.5% ± 15.9 of DNA reads). These results resolve long-standing conjecture whether spiny lobster phyllosomata attach to large gelatinous hosts to feed on them.

We characterised the net impact of recent environmental changes on hapuku (Polyprion oxygeneios), an apex predator found in continental slope habitats (>200 m depth) by using dendrochronology techniques to develop a multi-decadal record of growth from otoliths. Fish were sampled off temperate south-western Australia, a region strongly influenced by the Leeuwin Current, a poleward-flowing, eastern boundary current.
