ID 82597͒ We propose maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) for upstream signal detection in a high-speed centralized supercontinuum broadband-lightsource (SC-BLS) wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON). Upstream pulse carriers are produced by a SC-BLS at the central office (CO), modulated by 10 Gbit/ s upstream data at optical network units (ONUs), and finally detected by MLSE at the CO. MLSE effectively compensates the impairments from (1) asynchronous modulation of upstream pulse carriers at ONUs; and (2) chromatic dispersion (CD) in the fibers. Compared to the conventional method using alignment monitors at ONUs for upstream modulation synchronization and all-optical components for CD compensation, the proposed method features significant cost saving, lower power requirement for upstream signals, and lower operation complexity for ONUs in the SC-BLS WDM-PON.

This paper introduces optical physical-layer network coding (OPNC) and the recent development of OPNC, with focused discussion on "commonchannel" OPNC that can efficiently utilize network resources. It also describes the challenges ahead of OPNC, including incorporating more than two signals for OPNC; circumventing the higher signal processing complexity when higher order modulations are adopted; and exploiting OPNC in more sophisticated multichannel systems.

They feature easy network maintenance as there is no active component at the remote node (RN). However, in conventional PONs, both upstream and downstream bandwidths have to be time-shared among all optical network units (ONUs). By applying WDM technique to PONs, the total system capacity can be further enhanced. Each ONU enjoys a dedicated bandwidth and resolves the ranging problem as in PONs. In both conventional PON and WDM-PON, little work has been done to offer protection capability though fiber fault detection methods have been extensively studied. We propose a novel network architecture for WDM-PON which offers 1:1 protection capability. In case of any fiber cut between remote node and ONUs, the affected ONU can reroute the wavelength channels via the adjacent ONU and can still maintain normal bidirectional traffic.

The finite optical power in each downstream IRZ bit can be simply remodulated by the upstream data at the optical network unit. This can make each downstream and upstream pair share a single light source and such light reuse can be easily realized. An experiment on 10-Gb/s downstream IRZ signal generation, 2.5-Gb/s upstream signal remodulation, and two-way transmission is successfully demonstrated. The downstream/upstream signal performance in such a PON has also been analyzed, which is useful for system design.
