For her latest collaborative project, Julien Baker has teamed up with Torres. As one of the first previews of the fruits of their combined forces, the duo stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday to play a new song called “Sugar in the Tank.” Watch the performance below.
“Sugar in the Tank” finds Baker breaking out her banjo and Torres matching the energy with a countrified, overdriven Telecaster. The song is love-sick, sweet, and quite easy on the ears, arriving complete with a a full band accompaniment (including pedal steel and strings) and a tear-in-your-beer solo.

While few details have thus far been revealed when it comes to the scope of the two songwriters’ team up, they do have a handful of tour dates on the horizon. Baker and Torres are set to hit a series of festivals together, including Big Ears in Knoxville, High Water Music Festival in Charleston, Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City, and more (get tickets here). They’ll also be playing New York City’s Mercury Lounge tonight (Wednesday, December 11th); snag last-minute tickets here.
In October, Torres and Baker made appearances during each other’s respective sets at a Webster Hall concert to debut two new songs. They’ve since launched a website together that features the Matador Records logo. Taken all together, it feels like an album or EP announcement is imminent.
Prior to her linking up with Torres, Baker had another little-known supergroup called boygenius. Earlier this year, she also embarked on a solo tour and appeared on Touché Amoré’s new album Spiral in a Straight Line.
