Last night, when news broke of Apple’s possible acquisition of Beats Electronics, many were quick to point out that the deal, reported to be worth $3.2 billion, would make Dr. Dre the first billionaire in hip-hop. Dre himself has now declared this to be true, making the proclamation in a video filmed by, of all people, Tyrese.
“The first billionaire in hip-hop, right here from the motherfuckin’ West Coast,” Dre proudly acclaimed. Tyrese, meanwhile, aptly pointed out that Forbes’ recent list of the Five Wealthiest Rappers is in need of some updating. Dre was previously ranked at No. 2.
Update: As Forbes notes, Dre currently owns between 20 and 25 percent of Beats. After taxes, he’ll net worth will be in the neighborhood of $800 million. So not quite a billionaire, but almost.
So, maybe now we can get Detox?
