Em 1853 houve um crescimento vertiginoso do movimento espiritualista moderno. Andrew Jackson Davi... more Em 1853 houve um crescimento vertiginoso do movimento espiritualista moderno. Andrew Jackson Davis, uma das principais figuras desse movimento, compilou um conjunto de instruções para a organização de séances. Seu principal argumento era de que o triunfo na comunicação com o mundo espiritual dependia da presença de um balanço adequado de elementos positivos e negativos. Para esse fim, os frequentadores de séances foram instruídos a formar um "círculo harmônico"; aqueles cujo temperamento negativo foi sinalizado foram colocados em assentos alternados com aqueles indivíduos de temperamento positivo 3 . O balanço de forças necessário para comunicação com o mundo espiritual poderia ser aprimorado ainda com a preparação de condições vantajosas no ambiente. ArtScroll-a major contemporary Orthodox Jewish publishing house based in Brooklyn, New York-offer... more ArtScroll-a major contemporary Orthodox Jewish publishing house based in Brooklyn, New York-offers a compelling case for studying the role of materiality in religious print culture. This essay draws upon actor-network theory to examine the "material agency" of key ArtScroll publications, such as prayer books, Bibles, and cookbooks, showing how these artifacts play an active role within various arenas of Jewish social life, from public prayer to domestic display to kitchen labor. By focusing on the role of book covers, binding materials, and graphic icons in the constitution of ArtScroll's material agency, this essay explores how these devices help to define patterns of ritual performance and consumer lifestyles and how they contribute to struggles over institutional identity and the politics of Jewish authenticity. By examining the actual processes of distribution of actions among people and their books, this analysis complicates the stereotypical image of Jews as a "people of the book" and challenges sweeping claims about Jewish text-centrism. Ontario. His areas of research are religion, media and technology, including studies of contemporary Orthodox Jewish print culture (in particular, the "ArtScroll phenomenon"), and the transatlantic production of occult knowledge and the "electrical imaginary" in the late nineteenth century.

This article focuses on the relationship of aesthetics and ascetics with regard to the publicatio... more This article focuses on the relationship of aesthetics and ascetics with regard to the publication and popular reception of Kosher By Design, a cookbook published by a major American Jewish Orthodox press, ArtScroll Publications. The article analyses the ideological, rhetorical, discursive, and iconographic modes of address embedded within this text, treating them as instances of popular religion, and also as elements of a project in and through which the Orthodox Jewish intellectuals associated with ArtScroll seek to assert new forms of religious authority, in the context of a broader culture of "kosher consumerism," to which this text is directed. The article ends by highlighting the paradoxical character of this form of "post-scripture," in which books like Kosher By Design, and by extension other ArtScroll texts-including their popular prayer-books-are caught between competing demands of popularity and authority, art and asceticism, and religious stringency and bourgeois living. "all too human" limits and needs . 2 The intellectual challenge is how to attend carefully to the blurry line that both divides and connects asceticism and aesthetics without indulging in unconvincing generalizations, since, after all, their relationship changes over time and from one cultural context to another. This is all the more pressing an issue in contexts of rapid change, such as our own, which has been marked by the proliferation of new aesthetic forms, and of new mechanisms for the production, distribution, consecration, and consumption of art.
