Can u make a map like 2019 Lincoln version for Precinct, and i wonder so how map like that own, so I can make 2021 Omaha mayoral election one because try make better precinct map? JNOJ1423 (talk) 19:21, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I don't have the current precinct boundaries for Lincoln, so I can't make a map of the 2023 mayoral election. I have seen precinct maps of it online, however, so I can look more into it. Making precinct maps is pretty simple, all you need is QGIS(which is free). There are a decent amount of tutorials online that go more in depth, especially on twitter, so I'd recommend looking at those. However here's the short version: First you need to find the precinct shapefile(either from the county, city, state) and import it into QGIS. Then you need to find the data for that election and get it into a spreadsheet. Make sure one of the columns in the spread sheet matches the precinct names used in the shapefile(can find in the attributes table). The data will most likely just be raw votes, so you will need to convert it to a percent/decimal at some point, so I'd recommend doing that now(although it can be done in QGIS). Then you need to import the spreadsheet into QGIS and join it and the precinct layer. To do this double click on the layer name, select the joins category, hit the green plus in the bottom, and then select the two fields to join(these fields should be identical). Then, go to the symbology tab. If there are only two candidates(or if you want to make a margin instead of voteshare map) you can use "Graduated symbology", otherwise you have to use "Rule based symbology". Once there, double click on it and a menu should pop up. Hit the purple symbol, go to fields and values, and choose the candidate to do first. Then, type a greater than and less than statement with the percentage range you want, then change the symbol color accordingly(also set the stroke color to white and get it as small as possible). Then in the layers tab select "New Print Layout", add the map, remove the background and rescale(for the page background right click on it, select page properties and set the color opacity to 0), then export as an SVG. Again I'd recommend looking for more in depth tutorials, but hopefully this helps. Have a good day! Incognito melon (talk) 19:39, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do you make your base congressional maps?

[edit]

So I saw the maps you make and I'm thinking of making some of my own. But the map shapes you use are different than the other ones in commons, and I like yours better. Where did you get/create them? NSNW (talk) 20:15, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I get the county shapefiles from https://digital.newberry.org/ahcb/index.html and congressional shapefiles from https://cdmaps.polisci.ucla.edu/Incognito melon (talk) 20:19, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I've looked at both sites and they don't look very user friendly. Do you mind giving a sort of step by step if you have the chance? NSNW (talk) 20:55, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

maps

[edit]

Hi thank you for your contributions, this is just friendly reminder that we have our own standardized shapes we use for US election maps, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Standardized_SVG_county_maps_of_US_states please use these in the future as they don't use up as much memory as your files which are much larger (over 1 MB), it better for those trying to load internet pages faster, if you could also please adapt from these as well for the previous county boundaries like for Colorado that would be great historical maps are here feel free to add some more we need them for the old colorado election pages, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Historic_standardized_SVG_county_maps_of_US_states thank you have a good day remember the map width will always be 810px Putitonamap98 (talk) 21:05, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies, the reason I was using different shapefiles was because the last time I viewed those maps their geometry had been way too oversimplified and I did not know they had been updated. In the future I will use those maps if their geometry is accurate, such as for Wisconsin, South Carolina, and Louisiana. However some, such as Texas and Washington, include unneccessary water boundaries and/or unneccessary oversimplificiations so until those files are fixed I'll continue to use more accurate shapefiles. However, I will use standard color schemes, sizes, and line widths, as well as doing all that I can to reduce the file size. Thank you for the heads up and have a good day! Incognito melon (talk) 00:48, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you no problem! Could you do something for me please? I haven't been able to find anyone who can make old county boundaries. right now i'm looking at getting the pre 1980 Colorado county maps done, reflecting the past boundaries, i just need someone to make the base maps so i can color them in and update them on their wiki pages which are still using the very old much more simplified shapes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_Colorado_gubernatorial_election. could you modify from these maps and upload them to this section on commons? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Historic_standardized_SVG_county_maps_of_Colorado
I would really appreciate it
Here is a good reference for finding all the past county boundaries for all US states
https://digital.newberry.org/ahcb/map/map.html#CO Putitonamap98 (talk) 00:12, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For sure, I should be able to get those done within the next week or so. The only question I have is where can I find the color schemes used for base maps? Whenever I've made historical county maps the base color is just a uniform shade of black. Incognito melon (talk) 00:17, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
