Beryl Ford Collection
[edit]Hi, as you probably have noticed already, some of the images from the Beryl Ford Collection that you've uploaded have been deleted. The problem is that their license, contrary to what is claimed in Attribution, doesn't allow derivative works: You are free to distribute this photo provided the content is left unchanged. I've hence asked the administrators to delete the rest of the images from that collection. –Tryphon☂ 09:28, 17 April 2011 (UTC)
- I was greatly surprised to find your ruling that none of the historical images from the Tulsa City-County Library Beryl Ford Collection may be used on Wikipedia. I'm not a copyright lawyer, and I don't really understand what is meant by Wikipedia being a "derivative" site. Apparently that is the key to understanding why the use of these pictures is considered a copy violation, when the source-supplied permissions seems to allow them, at least to this lay person. Nevertheless, I am in no position to argue Wikipedia policy. I will remove links to all the images I have used on Wiki pages as expeditiously as possible. Bruin2 (talk) 00:44, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
- This site is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. Files at Commons can be used in Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikinews and other projects. Commons’ policy requires most files to be free content, which i.a. means it must be possible to distribute modified versions of the files (i.e. derivative works), even if that is not needed by a particular Wikipedia use. --AVRS (talk) 18:45, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 11:02, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Concern about Use of Beryl Ford Images on Wikipedia
[edit]A complaint has been made that all images posted on the Internet by the Tulsa City County Library from its collection by Beryl Ford do not fall within the Public Domain and therefore must be removed quickly from Wikipedia. I disagree with the interpretation that all images from the Beryl Ford Collection, now held by the Tulsa City County Library (TCCL), must be removed from Wikipedia. I think Wikipedia should address the concern about these images in more detail.
While the 2011 complaint does mention the possibility that some of the images may have been published previously, and notes that some may already be in the Public Domain, it appears that the complainant did not examine all of the specific images. That should be done. The images uploaded to Wikipedia credit TCCL as well as the late Mr. Ford’s collection. The images are duplicates of those posted by TCCL, and have not been altered. I do not understand why they are being referred to as derivative images. That term would seem to apply only when original images have been annotated, cropped, or altered in some way.
Permission and limitations for use was included verbatim from the images at the time they were downloaded from the TCCL website.
The great age of certain photos seems relevant. Although I have not performed an exhaustive search to see where and when photos from this collection have previously been published, I have seen many on the Internet on sites such as blogs and articles from the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture and Chronicles of Oklahoma.
Wikipedia’s own article about copyrights says:
In the United States, all books and other works published before 1923 have expired copyrights and are in the public domain. In addition, works published before 1964 that did not have their copyrights renewed 28 years after first publication year also are in the public domain, except that books originally published outside the US by non-Americans are exempt from this requirement, if they are still under copyright in their home country.
Many photos from the collection that the complainant asserts must be deleted bear dates prior to these cut-off dates.
The photos listed above have generally been uploaded to Wikipedia articles describing various aspects of Oklahoma history. I think that they should be reviewed by a qualified attorney who is very knowledgeable about copyright law in the United States. I hope they will be retained wherever practical and legal. In my opinion, their removal will downgrade the value of the related articles to Wikipedia readers. Bruin2 (talk) 16:03, 18 August 2013 (UTC)
- I've copied this to Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Bruin2, and responded there. Future comments should probably be put on that page, to make it easier for other participants in the discussion to find them. Thanks for taking the time to write this up. Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement
[edit]Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!
[edit]- ⧼Wikibase-terms/Bruin2⧽: Deutsch, Ελληνικά, English, français, magyar, italiano, македонски, 日本語, русский, svenska
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Copyright status: File:539185-M.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:539185-M.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
