Wilmot Proviso and Texas

Did the en:Wilmot Proviso apply to Texas? I thought it did not. --JWB (talk) 23:59, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I apologize for having to partially reverse myself, but I found a source saying that some Northerners did want the Wilmot Proviso to apply to the disputed territories that Texas had claimed but not gained control of prior to en:Texas Annexation. I've added the quote and source to en:Wilmot Proviso. So maps of the Wilmot Proviso area of applicability should be shaded to show those areas under dispute. --JWB (talk) 20:22, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Map is wrong in 1858 and 1861

The map shows the western side of Utah territory as being a slave territory and the eastern side as being a free territory. It was made a slave territory in 1852 when the Act in Relation to Service passed. Also, can we get an image where the info box doesn't cover a boundary between free territories and slave territories, or maybe a bit further north so you can see both Nebraska and Utah territory? New Mexico Territory

The w:New Mexico Territory was not a "slave territory", that's what the w:New Mexico Campaign was about during the American Civil War. w:Confederate Arizona split from New Mexico in order to be a slave territory. The reason Arizona exists today, is because after the Union success during the New Mexico Campaign, they successfully removed Confederate sympathizers from Southern New Mexico and had them retreat to Texas and the area of the future state of Arizona. Slave holding statistics in NMT were similar to that of w:Ohio, far-and-few between and basically non-existent, as the laws of w:Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico were mostly still in effect in the region which had a provision making slavery illegal. 2601:8C2:8101:278:455D:D85F:9B89:8210 13:11, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
