Summary
[edit]DescriptionVeterans Memorial Island Sanctuary.jpg |
English: The Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary is a serene park located adjacent to Riverside Park on the Vero Beach barrier Island, south of the Merrill P. Barber Bridge.
The Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary has a rich history dating back to World War II. The Intracoastal Waterway was set to be dredged, and Mr. Alex MacWilliam Sr., a veteran and member of the Florida Legislature, convinced the Federal Government to realign the existing Vero Beach channel to make way for a modern drawbridge. The surplus dredging material was then used to create Memorial Island. On May 5, 1947, the City of Vero Beach purchased the island, and it was dedicated in the early 1960s as Memorial Island Park. On August 19, 2003, a Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary Advisory Committee was formed to assist the City Council and the Veterans Council with reviewing documentation for proposed memorials to be constructed on the island. In July 6, 2004, the name was changed to Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary to better reflect its purpose as a sanctuary for veterans. |
