Description
English: This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 22 May 2021, shows the Stromboli volcano in eruption. Stromboli is a volcano in the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily, Italy. On 19 May, an eruption caused a high column of ash, the ejection of incandescent lapilli and a strong outflow of lava. The lava flow poured down towards the sea on the Sciara del Fuoco, a desertic area of the island. As shown in the image acquired by Sentinel-2, the lava flow was still flowing three days after the start of this new eruptive phase. The data provided by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites allows for high resolution temporal and spatial monitoring of eruptions around the world.
