Text Appearing Before Image:
n1927, he spent several months as an observerof the Chinese armies then engaged in civilwar. During a later assignment as militaryattache, attached to the American Embassyin Peking, lie learned to know Chinese offi-cials and military leaders of the highest rank. Few people realize that General Stilwellthroughout the greatest years of his careerwas almost blind. The explosion of an ammu-nition dump during World War I caused asevere injury to the left eye so that he couldnot distinguish the fingers on a hand at threefeet. The vision of the right eye requiredheavy correction and constant use of glasses.During the trying days in Chungking, as well asduring the jungle campaigns in Burma, it wasoften necessary to work by candlelight. Hisindomitable urge to do his job, and do it well, forced him to strain the one remaining eye. It is my hope that the publication of thesejournals will bring a clearer understanding ofthe problems America faces in China. —Mrs. Joseph W. Stilwell. INTERNATIONAL
Text Appearing After Image:

Vineyard of the Lord—and aint that the truth? C Ik Stilwell, Madame Chiang Kai-shek and the Generalissimo. Of Madame Chiang,Stilwell wrote: direct, forceful, energetic, loves power, eats up publicity and flat-tery ... is a great help on occasion. He referred to Chiang by nickname Peanut.
