Description

Le boulevard de la Liberté (Brivibas bulvaris, au premier plan au centre), est le grand axe de la ville de Riga, il mène au cœur de la ville historique autrefois entourée de remparts et dont les emplacements ont été transformés en espaces verts

A la différence de Tallinn qui, à la fin du 19ème siècle, faute de moyens suffisants a conservé sa ville ancienne, (celle-ci est devenue aujourd'hui un attrait touristique majeur de la capitale de l'Estonie), Riga, à l'époque, ville plus riche que Tallinn, a modernisé ses vieux quartiers.

En conséquence, l'intérêt culturel de Riga est aujourd'hui davantage centré sur les quartiers art nouveau que sur les quelques bâtiments anciens qui, en plus, ont souvent du être reconstruits après les bombardements de la dernière guerre.

Au premier plan, la cathédrale de la Nativité (orthodoxe russe), construite entre 1876 et 1884, par l'architecte Robert Pflug et le monument de la Liberté de Karlis Zale. Divers monuments et sites sont signalés sur la photo. Le fleuve Daugava est peu visible, il coule perpendiculairement à l'axe de la prise de vue.
