Summary
[edit]DescriptionOriental turtle dove facts 06.jpg |
English: The Oriental Turtle Dove, also known as the Rufous Turtle Dove, belongs to the Columbidae family and boasts a vast native range extending from Central Asia to Japan. Exhibiting variations in plumage patterning across six distinct subspecies, this dove is adorned with captivating features: rufous-scaled scapulars, dusky underparts, and a striking black-and-white striped patch on its neck composed of silver-tipped feathers.
While the plumage varies among subspecies, the southernmost populations remain resident, while others undertake migratory journeys southward during winter. Preferring open lowland woods and copses with lush undergrowth, these doves are rather elusive, often concealed within the tree canopy. Their distinctive call consists of two hoarse notes followed by two clear notes: "hr-hr oo-oo." This particular specimen was photographed at Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. |
