A propriedade do Alto da Boa Vista, adquirida por seu pai em 1913, foi reformada por Castro Maya nos anos 20, dando-lhe uma fisionomia de residência neocolonial. Localizado numa área de 151.132 m2 no seio da Floresta da Tijuca, o Museu do Açude tem como proposta relacionar o patrimônio cultural ao natural, privilegia a arte oriental, as artes decorativas e instalações de artistas contemporâneos.
