Summary

[edit]
Description Constructed during the late 1940s or early 1950s, this International Style office building commands the corner of Main Street and Reams Avenue in downtown Roxboro, North Carolina. Adjacent to the Kirby Theater, an Art Deco-style structure built around the same time, this building is one of the town’s tallest, and looks almost out of place in the otherwise sleepy downtown area. Due to the presence of this building and the adjacent Kirby Theater, which were built around the same time, I would guess that a fire during the late 1940s may have claimed several buildings on the block where the buildings now stand, and they were built in the place of them, as the timing of their construction seems a bit off when considering the material shortages and austerity in the time between World War II and the Korean War, when a lot of resources from the United States were being sent to rebuild Western Europe and East Asia, especially considering the location of these buildings. Though this building has all or most of its external original features intact, it does appear to need some work cosmetically, especially with the amount of rust on the trim between the windows. A nearby building further south on Main Street displays a similar aesthetic, with a simple limestone facade and similar window patterns, possibly using some of the material gathered for this building to reface an older building or fill in an empty lot.
