| Description |
least snapdragon, Antirrhinum kingii, California, White Mountains, Antelope Springs, Deep Springs Valley, elevation 1715 m (5625 ft). This humble snapdragon is endemic to cooler parts of the northern Mojave Desert and warmer parts of the southern Great Basin of western North America below 2300 meters (7500 feet) elevation, getting as far north as southeastern Oregon. It is a good indicator that the desert has gotten plenty of rain and is "all-in" for that year, which indeed it was! In this species the little branch accompanying each flower will elongate into a fully flowering branch if moisture persists late enough in the season. In related vining species, this structure becomes a tendril that helps to support and secure the plant to the surrounding vegetation. Also visible in this image are fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) and yellowthroats (Phacelia fremontii). |
