| Description |
Layne milkvetch, Astragalus layneae, California, White Mountains, Deep Springs Valley drainage, elevation 1743 m (5720 ft). This distinctive perennial milkvetch is essentially endemic to the Mojave Desert, extending just barely into the southwest corner of the Great Basin right here in the southern White Mountains, where it reaches its northwestern limit. The species is distinctive because the stems of a colony, though appearing to be separate plants, are actually connected by underground rhizomes, unlike any other milkvetch species in the North American deserts. The flowers and fruits are also readily recognized. The plants are found mostly in sandy granitic soils, the rocky calcareous soil at this location being one of the few exceptions that prove the rule. |
