DescriptionL'Exposition universelle de Paris, 1889.jpg |
English: Scarce and fantastic view of the 1889 World's Fair, held in Paris, and the event for which Gustave Eiffel designed his eponymous tower. This poster is notable for its fine artistic design, using subtle twilight colors and wavy lines to represent the rest of Paris.
The central view shows the Champs de Mars through to the Trocadero, with the Eiffel Tower standing tall above the fairgrounds. Surrounding the map are various countries' flags, images of buildings that were part of the exhibition, and various mottos (in French and Latin) such as "Pax," "Industry," "Work," and "Agriculture." The monogram of the poster's artist "GTC" is in the lower-left corner, ornately inscribed into the book below the title. We have been unable to trace the artist's full name, although it is known that the artist would later go on to produce a poster of the world's fair of 1900 eleven years later.
