English: Fortrey memorial 2/2 Memorial in Mepal Church describing Fortrey's Hall part 2.
Fortrey's Hall is the main interest point. The memorial is about the man who renamed and modified the old hall which was behind the naming of the area of the fens known as Byal Feb (Fen by Hall). The geographic relevance of the memorial is that it describes the renovated hall as being the envy of the times given the location. (It's quite a modest building by today's standards so it gives a mental image of what the rest of habitations must have been like at the time in the fens.) It also links the hall to Kew Palace (The Dutch House) , built by the same man. Fortrey was one of the Duke of Bedford's gentlemen Adventurers who drained the fens. Fortrey Hall was his on-site home. |
