This species (formerly called Gymnura rafflesii) was discovered and determined in 1835, or even earlier (SOURCE: UBL BPL 2922 (WESTERN MANUSCRIPTS LEYDEN UNIVERSITY (NL): P.W. Korthals (Padang, Sumatra) to C.G.C. Reinwardt (Leyden University);letter dated 20 June 1835. In this letter Korthals informs Reinwardt that during a trip in the mountain region near Padang they received a specimen of "Gymnura rafflesii" (english; "moonrat").
