Summary
[edit]DescriptionDerryleamleary Castle - geograph.org.uk - 537647.jpg |
English: Derryleamleary Castle Situated in the townland of Castle Derry, this is a former McCarthy Crimeen castle of just three storeys. The MacCarthy Crimeens were constantly involved with tribal disputes with their relations. In 1576 the castle was raided by Donal na Pipi MacCarthy of Kilbrittain, who later had to make amends by returning 25 stolen cattle, and making financial restitution. The castle changed hands several times during the following centuries, and ended its days as a soup kitchen during the Famine of 1847 - 50. |
