English: Derelict passenger subway This is the well hid subway entrance to the now demolished Butlins holiday camp from the closed railway station.
Filey Butlins station had two 900ft platforms and could handle four trains at the same time. At the platform end was a concourse area that allowed passengers to be transferred to the camp by road train, routed under the main road by the now buried subway. Although the number of holidaymakers staying at the camp increased from approximately 75,000 in 1955 to 173,000 in 1975 there was no increase in the numbers who travelled there by rail, in fact the opposite occurred due to the increasing use of the private car and the advent of continental holidays. A decision to close the branch was made at the end of the 1977 holiday season. The holiday camp itself was closed in 1983. The only reminder that it existed is the old station remains and the buried subway across the main coast road.
