[edit]DescriptionDame Pattie Menzies at Blackheath Rhodo Festival.jpg |
English: Notes: the inaugural Blackheath Rhododendron Festival was officially opened by Dame Pattie Menzies, second from left in front row. Kath Johnston, one of the founders of the Blackheath Kookaburra Kindergarten, is far right.
Dame Pattie Maie Menzies GBE (2 March 1899 – 30 August 1995) was the wife of Australia's longest-serving Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies. She was appointed OBE Dame Grand Cross some months later in the New Year's Honours in 1954. Dame Pattie was in the gallery of the House of Representatives when, on 20 April 1939, Sir Earle Page made an intemperate personal attack on her husband. She walked out and never spoke to Page again. There was a steely strength behind her slight form, smiling blue eyes, and vivacious manner.
