Description
English: Bond for 100 pesos to finance the uprising against the colonial regime of Spain in Cuba, issued on 1 June 1869 in New York by the Cuban government in exile, signed in the original by José Morales Lemus as President of the Junta Central Republicana de Cuba y Puerto Rico. The Liberty Bond, which carried an interest rate of 6%, was only due if the rebellion succeeded in freeing Cuba from Spanish foreign rule. The Cuban independence fighter José Morales Lemus (1808-1870) was a wealthy lawyer and businessman. In 1866, he led a delegation of reformists who travelled to Madrid to negotiate with the Spanish government. After these efforts failed, he sided with the plantation owners who started the Ten Years War (1868-1878). After fleeing Cuba, he became president of the Cuban government-in-exile in New York.
