18th Century Ferry Transportation

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Before there were bridges the only way to cross creeks and rivers was by ferries. They would traditionally connect Native American tails, paths and rudimentary roads. Built on site at the crossing they would be owned and operated by the builder who would charge a small fee as regulated by the state's courts. This fee was based on the size of the cargo and/or number of animals and passengers. Later in the 19th century bridges were often ordered to be constructed at the landing but the ferry would sometimes continue to operate as long as it was economically feasible to do so.
