Español: La antigua mina de oro romana de Las Médulas se encuentra en el extremo occidental de los Montes Aquilanos. Para la extracción del oro, se excavaron galerías en la arcilla por donde se hacia circular agua que acababa reventando la montaña, permitiendo la recogida del mineral. en la actualidad quedan restos de algunas de estas cuevas en un paisaje dominado por los picachos de arcilla roja, que son los restos del monte que antiguamente ocupaba el lugar. una vez quedó abandonada la explotación, la vegetación fue cubriendo el lugar. En la actualidad, además de los sotos de castaños centenarios cultivados por los vecinos del pueblo de Las Médulas, es una zona donde se encuentra una interesante mezcla de vegetación atlántica (abedules, robles albares, acebos, serbales de cazadores, avellanos, ...) y de vegetación mediterránea (encinas, alcornoques, madroños, jaras,...), la arista que recorre la senda de Reirigo marca una línea divisoria muy clara entre la zona donde predomina el bosque caducifolio al norte y el bosque mediterráneo al sur.
