There was nothing like itpossible in the swamps of the Chickahominy, orthe tangled thickets of the Rappahannock, or on thewooded shores of the Rapidan. There no enemywas visible half a musket-shot away; but here, ata distance of nearly a mile across a cultivated valley,part of which was covered with waging grain andpart smooth in stubble fields, the whole irradiatedwith the unclouded beams of the July sun, an aiTQyformed itself in line of battle under the eyes of anappreciative adversary. It came on across thevalley in the form of a wedge, of which Pickettsown division about 5000 strong formed the finelytempered point; on the left was Heths di^dsion,commanded by Pettigrew, swelled by a part ofTrimbles di\ision; on the right the column ofWilcox moved forward in support; altogethersome 17,000 men. They came forward withthe steadiness of troops on parade; the direc-tion they took at first, if retained, would have 264 ABKAHAM LINCOLN 1863.
