Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A 1909 school feast photograph by Joshua Biltcliffe (1853-1937), at Upper Cumberworth, West Yorkshire, England. The photograph, judging by the church in the background, was probably taken in the field behind the still existing parish church attached village school on Cumberworth Lane. A School Feast Day was typically for Christian schools a celebration of a saint's feast day. The village parish church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, whose feast day is 19 December, which could indicate a specific date for the photograph. Joshua Biltcliffe was born at Penistone, and first took up photography at Thurlstone, later returning to Penistone, where he combined his photographic business with a general store at 6 Bridge Street. He, with his sons John Thomas and Fred became Joshua Biltcliffe & Sons. A further studio was opened in 1904 at Skelmanthorpe. The reverse is stamped with 'Biltcliffe, Penistone & Skelmanthorpe.' The geog-location is the approximate position of the camera.
