Summary
[edit]Description19.05.84 Gatwick Airport 73133 (5906176659).jpg |
English: Early days of the Gatwick Express service from London's Victoria station to Gatwick Airport. For many years the service was formed of regular Southern Region EMUs which were not particularly suitable for those taking heavy luggage etc. So it was decided to adapt Mark 2 air conditioned stock with additional luggage space. For traction, the sets were push-pulled by a class 73/1 electro-diesel locos with a specially adapted driving van converted from old suburban EMUs. The coaching stock was initially painted in an adapted British Rail InterCity colours with the class 73s in varying livery. Some years later, a dedicated fleet of 12 class 73s were used and re-classified class 73/2s. In the early 2000s, the push-pull operation was gradually phased out and replaced by class 460 'Juniper' EMUs. Sporting full yellow ends, this view of 73133 is seen approaching Gatwick Airport on 19 May 1984. Note the yellow numbered disc on the front of the loco used to identify a diagram number. |
