Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Historical map showing the geologic “districts” of Nova Scotia as recognized by Abraham Gesner in 1836. The explanation in the source work (see below) reads as follows:
The South side of the Province, painted brown, is
the Primary District, and is composed principally of
Granite, Gneiss and Mica Slate.
The
blue denotes the Slate District, which is com-
posed of Slate, Greywacke, and Greywacke Slate.
The Red Sandstone District is painted
light red.
The
crimson belts shew important beds of Iron Ore.
The Trap Rocks are painted
green, and the Coal
black.
With respect to modern geological concepts the “Primary” and “Slate Districts” correspond to the outcrop of predominantly Cambrian to Devonian metamorphic and plutonic rocks of the basement of the Meguma Terrane. The “Red Sandstone District” corresponds to outcrop of predominantly Early Carboniferous to Early Jurassic, post-Acadian, weakly to non-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The “Trap Rocks” are Early Jurassic basalts of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province.
