[edit]
Description
English: The Sreevallabha temple of Thiruvalla is a pre-10th century Hindu temple complex dedicated to Vallabha (Maha Vishnu). The site once included a Vedic college, a monastery and a performance arts school sponsored and added by various dynasties such as Ay, Chera and Thiruvithamkoor as evidenced by copper plate and other inscriptions. The current complex is over 8 acres and consists of many layers of construction and restorations. The Sreevallabha temple has prakara walls that is about 12 feet high. Four gopurams provide entrance into the compound. The Garuda-madam is over 53 feet tall and made of granite, making it one of the largest in South India. Inside are many shrines including those for Ganesha, Bhagavathy (Devi), Sastha, sage Vyasa and Durvasa, Dakshinamurthy, Lakshmi, Bhumi Devi (earth). The primary shrine is for Vishnu. The shrines have square plan and include Hindu artwork. The Vallabha shrine's daily rituals include the pancharatra samhita style of worship. The temple has a historic tradition of Kathakali puja – where Hindu worship is fused with the Indian classical dance performance.
