::Ok, I've read most of the several pages you linked, and I think I understand. The only blurry point is the threshold of originality. So, is it just like "a simple police on a simple font" is free, and a "more complicated work" isn't? Then the limit is kinda difficult to clarify. As I work most of the time on the french wikipedia, can you please tell me more about the fr.wp non-free content policy specifities? And so, just to be sure, about musc bands : if I post a picture, the only possibility is to own this (from a live or anything)? Another thing, about pictures you deleted : the was a picture of my "college" ('IUT' = "university institute of technology"), taken on the official website. The fact is I belong to the college's communication team, and my work on the fr:Institut_universitaire_de_technologie_Louis_Pasteur_de_Schiltigheim page has been appreciated by my professors, so I know if I'm allowed or not to use it, and I am... Do I have to take again the picture by myslef? (not a problem as I'm in every day, but thats sounds a bit stupid...)

Hello, Across.land.and.time!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello Across.land.and.time, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Cedric-bd.gif

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
 • use in any work, regardless of content
 • creation of derivative works
 • commercial use
 • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Across.land.and.time-picture.JPG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

"available for free"

Available for free has NOTHING to do with free content. We dont want files that you can watch for free, we collect files that are free of copyright (70 years following the authors death) or whose copyright holder waived most of their economic rights and allow anyone to reuse their work for free reuse by anyone, anytime, anywhere for any purpose including money making purposes. Thats free content. Commons:Project scope#Required licensing terms. Files grabbed from random website because they are "free beer" is not what we upload, COM:PRP. --Martin H. (talk) 20:00, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hum, I'm confused, sorry. Indeed, reading again the COM:PRP makes me understand I was wrong up'ing those files, because I don't own them.

The sad thing is Commons' rules are, maybe, a bit "overrated". Taking the recurring example that concerned me here : creating/watching a page, as for a music band, and seeing it without a picture, eh, that's kinda empty. I mean, a visual is always worthful to describe something. So, what's the deal, no way to post one if I didn't take it myself or if the (manager's) band has been dead for atleast 70 years? That's a complicated rule, and, to be honnest, that's sad, really.

And what about logo's? There are several ones uploaded by other users (example : logo), so what's the good method?

The rule is that Commons is a project only for free content. Thats our scope, see Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain. In general Wikimedia projects are free content projects. Some other projects have developed exemptions from this doctrin and allowing to upload non-free content, see meta:Non-free content. Per the Wikimedia foundation foundation:Resolution:Licensing_policy the Wikimedia Commons is the only project that is not allowed to make such exemptions. fr:Fichier:LogoAirbourne.gif is uploaded under the fr.wp non-free content policy, the logo is however very simple and possibly not protected by any copyright and therefore possibly public domain, see Commons:Licensing#Simple design. --Martin H.
