Hello, Stu's Images!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Autopatrol given

edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 23:46, 11 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Day Interview?

edit

HI Stu Phillips,

My name is Alice Roberts and I'm a communications intern with the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco. We're starting a new feature on the Foundation blog [1] to profile the photographers behind the beautiful photos that become Picture of the Day (POTD) on the Commons home page. You can see some of our past POTD posts here: https://blog.wikimedia.org/c/communications/picture-of-the-day/

Given that your photo "Mycena inclinata, Clustered Bonnet" is scheduled for 30 October 2012, we'd love to do a short interview with you either by phone, Skype, or email to discuss your work and your POTD. Please let me know if you think you'd be interested! You can contact me on my talkpage or via email at aroberts wikimedia.org

Thanks,

Aroberts (WMF) (talk) 22:30, 12 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!

edit

Dear Stu's Images,

You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.

In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.

Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.

Thanks,

Permission to use picture of Thorny Devil -- need signed release for publisher

edit

Hi Stu,

I'm working on a book for school teachers due out this fall about teaching engineering and design from a Nature-based perspective. I'm writing because I'm hoping to use an image of yours in the book, with due credit of course (from https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Moloch_horridus,_Thorny_Devil,_Alice_Springs.jpg). Your image would appear in a chapter about teaching sustainability.

Even though you kindly made your image available to others through Creative Commons, my publisher still requires a signed release form for any images I use in the book.

I hope you will contact me so I can answer any of your questions, and attach the release. My email address is [email protected] (samstier at gmail dot com)

Many thanks for considering my request!
