Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.Re: Please link to the original creator if you uploaded images from Wikipedia
editIt was a mistake. At the time I uploaded that image I used to do several errors tagging the images uploaded. I'm sorry for that. Now I think I'm going better (I hope...). --Ermanon 08:41, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
A quick note
editHi, just to let you know that there is no need to add Category:Flickr review needed to images you upload from Flickr. The inlusion of Flickrreview does it automatically. Cheers, -- RedCoat 13:52, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

editYour VFC installation method is deprecated
editHello Seav, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open!
editYou are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.
Dear Seav,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.
Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
Horse-drawn taxis in the Philippines
editIt is my (possibly incorrect) understanding that in general horse-drawn passenger vehicles in the Philippines are taxis. Is that correct?
My concern is to separate out taxis from carriages (now very rarely used but once used by the élite). So would you mind if I changed your re-direct so that Horse-drawn carriages in the Philippines re-directs to Horse-drawn taxis in the Philippines?
Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 01:07, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Eddaido: I will not object to your suggestion. My concern is that at least in touristic areas (like with Category:Calesas of Intramuros), these vehicles are not really used as taxis because they are very inefficient as a mode of transportation. These carriages/calesas are often used as a ride attraction so that is why I decided to redirect to "carriages" instead of "taxis" because that is a more neutral term, unlike taxis which implies actual transportation from one place to another. —seav (talk) 19:23, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Seav: My apologies for being so slow to respond. I set out to get all this Commons category in harmony. However you are quite right you make a perfectly valid distinction. I have made a new category:Horse-drawn tourist carriages in the Philippines and moved those images to it.
- Why is it that this page says Calesas are the most popular type of horse-drawn public 'transportation'? This suggests to me something ike a taxi but I know almost nothing about the Philippines.
- I would be pleased to know whether or not you agree. If necessary it can be reverted. Thanks, 02:07, 27 July 2019 (UTC)
- I would think that the use of the word "transportation" is in the general sense such as using the word "vehicle". The English Wikipedia article w:Kalesa would maybe be more informative to you. —seav (talk) 19:24, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

Catholicism or Latin Church as value for Religion or world view?
editHello, is there a consensus on which value to use for Religion or world view (P140) in Catholic churches in the Philippines? I am not a fan of using the value "Latin Church" since it is not that commonly known, especially in the Philippines; I use the value "Catholicism" instead. What are your thoughts and suggestions about this? Thanks. Sanglahi86 (talk) 02:55, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- Sanglahi86, there is no actual consensus, but please see this discussion where the idea of using the most specific religion/organization seems to be preferred. Catholicism I feel is way too broad because there are many types of Catholic Churches (like the w:Eastern Catholic Churches) that fall under this banner. "Latin Church" makes it very explicit that the PH churches are part of the largest Roman Catholic Church that isn't one of the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches. (While Eastern Catholics could attend Mass in any of the Catholic churches in the Philippines, there are still some differences in doctrine.) –seav (talk) 06:47, 16 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information. Hmm.. I thought the the 23 Eastern Catholic Churches were a minority and so I thought "Catholicism" was understood to refer to the "Latin Church". But ok, I will use "Latin Church" then from now on when adding new Roman Catholic church items; I will also replace "Catholicism" with this value in existing Philippine Catholic churches I come across. Kind regards. Sanglahi86 (talk) 06:12, 18 October 2024 (UTC)
