Your request
Hello, Russavia. I live in Voronezh, not in Murmansk. So I can't take photos of this buildings now. I uploaded to Commons photos from my archive:
- File:Генеральное консульство Норвегии в Мурманске.jpg
- File:Почётное консульство Исландии в Мурманске.jpg
I hope they will be useful. Regards from Voronezh. --Insider (talk) 01:20, 25 November 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for that mate, much appreciated. I'll keep hunting for someone in Murmansk to get the Finnish consulate in future. Cheers, russavia (talk) 01:38, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Russavia. I decided to reply on your talk page rather than clutter up High Contrast's further.
I appreciate what you're saying, but I informed the user he was uploading substantial numbers of duplicates and other users likewise informed him he was uploading large numbers of badly-categorized files with no realistic educational purpose, including, as you know, many with COM:IDENT problems. If you'll check his talk page, you'll see many people asking the user to be more discriminating and more careful, but to no avail: rather than heeding the advice of others, the user continued indiscriminate mass uploads of entire Flickr galleries and collections until he was blocked, so that Commons apparently now houses, among a great many files of dubious value, all of David Shankbone's holiday snaps and party pictures.
As for the limitations of Flickr2Commons, all the more reason, then, to avoid using such a tool if you lack the requisite experience to avoid falling afoul of its defects. Multiple messages from more experienced users suggesting you slow your pace and exercise greater care is a strong hint you may indeed lack that experience. And anyway, in my opinion, users alone are solely responsible for their uploads, and use of an automated tool is not an excuse. --Rrburke (talk) 01:14, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- We do not block editors for their using tools which we ourselves make available, and when the tool itself is largely responsible for many of the problems. MMM has been responsive to concerns raised, and has acted upon them. I have unblocked them as per my message on their talk page. I am sure they will heed my advice. Other than that, I don't see any need to drag this out any longer at this stage.

- That is actually their "trademark" notification. I think we really should delete the template itself, as it attempts to place limitations on what people can do with freely licenced images inline with the conditions of said licence, and contains nothing that can't be said by {{Trademark}}. Other than that, I'll leave it as is until someone takes to DR. russavia (talk) 04:09, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- In fact, I've gone ahead and replaced it with {{Trademark}}. russavia (talk) 04:12, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Is blindly uploading dupes (making others clean it up) really the way to go? Nymf (talk) 00:00, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- Please read my comments about f2c not adequately picking up dupes. In fact, f2c is supposed to check for links here on Commons, and it is not doing that properly. As I have said elsewhere, I have uploaded photos which were not picked up as duplicates before they were uploaded. And in fact, f2c has uploaded multiple duplicates in the same upload session. I think it is likely an issue with toolserver. As to them not cleaning them up, they are doing this as I can see from their contributions. russavia (talk) 00:12, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, meant to give you this link -- {{Duplicate}} -- there is no need to COM:DR duplicate files. russavia (talk) 00:16, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- The tool is not really supposed to replace common sense, though. Perhaps the user should check the categories before uploading them. There are still dupes uploaded days ago, so the user is not doing a good job of cleaning up after himself. Nymf (talk) 00:24, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- Well, it is a bit difficult to clean-up when one is blocked without being given an opportunity to clean-up. And their contributions since I unblocked them would suggest otherwise. russavia (talk) 00:26, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- I had this problem with Flickr_Mass, leading to many unfortunate duplicates, particularly when the tool locked-up and restarted. In addition, if you are mass uploading from what you believe is a good Flickrstream, checking for a small number of files that might have already been uploaded without having the upload tool help you, or warn you, is nigh on impossible. It vaguely surprises me that someone has not written a bot to periodically sniff out duplicates (based on a test like "if <filename1> == <filename2> apart from '(2)' or '(3)' being tacked onto the name and <filesize1> == <filesize2> then mark the most recent file or the one with the shortest description for speedy deletion"). At the moment, though I have spotted and marked a couple of duplicates, I'm not seeing the 100+ that would get me excited enough to automate the process or pull a report. Cheers --Fæ (talk) 00:32, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

Dear Russavia,
On December 12 former mayor of New York Ed Koch will be 88 -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Koch He posed for my portrait of him last year -- http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Koch_%E2%80%93_Mayor_of_the_City_of_New_York.jpg Can you make this portrait a “Picture of the day” on December 12 and add it to “Today in images”, also on the main page of Wikimedia?
December 14, 2012 is a four-year anniversary of "the shoe incident", the subject of my drawing "Bush-Maliki News Conference. Baghdad, December 2008" -- http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bush-Maliki_News_Conference._Baghdad,_December_2008.jpg Please read about this incident at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muntadhar_al-Zaidi Can you make this picture a “Picture of the day” on December 14 and add it to “Today in images”?
Thank you. Dmitry

This is a strange image. The camera metadata clearly says PD but I can't find the source for the image. Its a pity the uploader never gave an online source. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:40, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Another example sadly by the same uploader.
Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:42, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for acting on the second image. Best Wishes, --Leoboudv (talk) 23:46, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
- I think we should be leaving a message for the person uploading that the online source may be required? What you think? russavia (talk) 01:25, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- Comment: I think that is perfectly acceptable. There should be an online source...even though from the metadata, the image is likely PD. Best Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 05:25, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

- No problem, please continue doing what you are doing with the categorisation, etc. I would ask you to be a bit more open to potential COM:SCOPE issues; such as some of the photos by "Alan Light" of "Alexis", etc. Are they really in scope? They look like private snaps to me? Cheers, russavia (talk) 05:27, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Что же там надо делать? Как я вижу, единственное трудное место — это слова про most frequently used in English-language literature.

- Hello Zerosei, you are right, and I just like to mention that I am far away from deciding anything here. I just wanted to draw attention to a set of potential copyright violations by this museum for some German pics (and probably some Italian and Russian are affected, too). --JuergenKlueser (talk) 23:47, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Completing usurpation
Hi Russavia,
Could I please ask if it would be possible for you to complete my usurpation request? None of the other bureaucrats seem to be responding. Cecil asked me to provide OTRS with a waiver of claim to the user name "Hex" on Commons from the two editors on the other Wikipedias, which I've done, so there isn't any further impediment.
I'm sorry to bother you with this request. It's just that this process has taken many, many weeks and I'd really like to be able to wrap it up and get on with things.
Thank you very much for your time and best wishes for the season.

- Also, can you please change your user page/talk page links in your signature to point to your Commons pages. russavia (talk) 15:35, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

Face blurring
Hey, I got a quick question about the face blurring issue. We can blur faces, delete the originals and stop worrying about privacy laws that way. But we still link to the source, which - of course - shows the unblurred version. Doesn't that kind of defeat the entire effort of blurring faces and deleting originals and so on? I'm no legal expert, but if this is really about respecting the law, I dare say we're doing a pretty poor job of it if we end up still linking to the unblurred version. Are there any commons policies or guidelines that deal with this or have looked at it from a legal perspective? --Conti|✉ 10:09, 24 December 2012 (UTC)
- While I do not wish to start or engage in a debate about the relevant laws, it seems to me that if the law requires consent of the subject to take and/or publish images, then blurring faces is in no way a solution. Some countries have more restrictive laws than others, but they are for the most part concerned with protecting the right of the individual to control the use of their image. If I am in a locker room in a gym, it is reasonable to expect that people may see me naked while I am showering or changing clothes. If someone takes images of me showering without my permission and then uploads them to Commons, blurring my face does not mean that the act is any less an invasion of my privacy. Hi, I am doing a bit of a quick sort of Flickr2Commons files uploaded by yourself into this pre-existing category. It will skip files appearing in the sub-categories of this user category, though there is a possibility it may make unexpected matches, drop me a note if you spot any and I'll ponder how to filter them out. I can run a more generalized search to mop up non-F2C uploaded files after this batch, though I'd prefer to set that up, say, next week rather than rely on my laptop for longer searches.
In the meantime, have a super gay time New Year's eve partying, try not to make too many edits while under the influence, and I look forward to lending you a helping hand in 2013. --Fæ (talk) 12:23, 31 December 2012 (UTC) |

I have some serious doubts about a photo
Hello, Russavia. I'd like to attract your attention to this file. I have some serious doubts about its truthfulness, or rather about the truthfulness of its description. (I've also posted this on the file's talk page. I was directed to you later.)
The photographer claims this photo was taken two hours before the crash of the depicted airplane (more details about the crash). The metadata says it's 10:32. Aparently the time is UTC. It can't be Eastern European (Poland) time zone because then it would mean that it was taken 40 minutes before the airplane took off. It means that the local time was 11:32. In the Northern hemisphere the noon sun should be roughly at the South or South-East. And, if the airplane is flying East or North-East (as the route suggests) the sun should be illuminating the airplane's starboard. However, on the photograph, the sun is aparently shining from the quarter port side (you can see the sun reflection on the left side of the windshield). This implies that the airplane is either flying West in the afternoon, or is flying East in the morning in the Southern hemisphere. Do I understand this part correctly? It is also very suspicious that such a unique shot wasn't used by any news agencies or published on plane-spotters websites. I believe the reason for that is that both of those require the original photograph with genuine metadata. I'm not sure what to do with these doubts, so I thought I'd talk to the Commons' bureaucrat. Could you please take a look? Leo711 (talk) 17:56, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Re: Thanks
Hi, the categorization I found was terrible. 80% of images were in wrong categories (wrong place, wrong continent, ...). What's more please leave them in categories like "Photographs of xyz by McKay Savage". These photos are about trips and so are too much various, it doesn't make sense to put 150 various photo of a city or a country of a trip in the category:city or category:country. --Rotpunkt (talk) 22:51, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- The categorisation is something that is done with Flickr Upload bot. All photos are currently in Category:Files uploaded by Russavia (cleanup) and I am going thru all photos, categorising, cleaning up and getting them into relevant articles. The categorisation with the Savage photos is similar to what I have done with Category:Photographs by Dennis G. Jarvis. I was simply saying thanks for your help :) russavia (talk) 23:12, 1 January 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, I have seen that are uploaded by a bot (Magnus Manske), I noticed problems like: File:Canada - BC - 05 - dusting of snow at Vermillion pass in Kootenay National Park (4035523134).jpg, where the categories are "british" and "columbia" instead of "british columbia". Probably it's something based on flickr tags, just my 2 cents. Cya. --Rotpunkt (talk) 10:13, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello Russavia,

That's great, but is a little problem about his files, because some of them are Microsoft Flight Simulator images, and are not suitable contents for Wikimedia Commons because of its copyright.--Dura-Ace (talk) 12:01, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

- Oh damn, thanks, I meant to upload one set from there, with a view to upload more. I've accidentally uploaded their entire stream, which I wanted to avoid because of those very issues. - Thanks for the barnstar. No problem with contacting Kentaro, his photos were initially licenced under BY-ND, but I contacted him and asked if he could relicence under BY-SA, and he was happy to oblige. I recontacted him and thanked him for making them available to us. Now I just need to finish categorising his photo stream. Cheers, russavia (talk) 04:56, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Russavia, after today's upload "spree" you will surely scan through all the images, so I'm not bothering you with a list. As you are surely aware that Russia, as far as I know, still has no FOP exemption you should try to identify the artists of the original works in the underground stations and evaluate whether the works are already in the PD.
File:Sportivnaya, Peoples museum of Moscow Metro (4959848002).jpg and File:Memorial Museum of Space Exploration (Мемориальный музей космонавтики) (5585763937).jpg are — independent of the license on Flickr — likely a derivatives, except if there is any special regulation for such photo in Russia. --Túrelio (talk) 09:50, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Turelio; this set is one which is on Flickr and for which it is likely to disappear in the near future. Although there is not currently FOP in Russia the law is going to be changing in the future (as has long been expected). Because these are very high value images, I discussed with several other admins on IRC and email on the best way to "preserve" these photos for use in the future, when the law changes. What I am doing is uploading the entire stream, and then those which are against FOP in Russia will be mass-placed into Category:Russian FOP cases, so that when the laws are changed, we can easily undelete them. Because the stream is likely to disappear, having Flickr upload bot review the images and confirm the licencing will stop a headache in future. So don't worry too much about this stream; anything against FOP (which now looking at it, isn't as large as was expecting) will be deleted in the next day or so. As to the photo of that photo; again such things in these streams are in the minority, and they will be deleted as uploads are cleaned up -- which I am doing pretty quickly :) Cheers, russavia (talk) 09:56, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Sorry, Category:Files from Mikhail Shcherbakov Flickr stream (FOP) is where the images will go, until they are mass-deleted and put into Russian FOP cases category. This is really the only way to be able to preserve, with licence validation, these photos for future use. :( russavia (talk) 10:04, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Hint: If files cannot be hosted on Commons til change of FOP in Russia, there might still be the alternative option of http://wikilivres.ca/wiki/Main_Page as an in-between-hoster. --Túrelio (talk) 11:35, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks, yeah I'll have a word to Dcoetzee about perhaps bulk importing the FOP images to wikilivres. The big issues for us would be the verifying of licencing in case the photos are deleted from Flickr, which is entirely possible. Now that the files are uploaded, they can perhaps import the images from us, keeping templates, etc intact, so that when the Russian government gets its f'ing ass into gear and does what everyone is expecting, they can be easily re-imported back here. russavia (talk) 11:39, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Files from curimedia
Hey Russavia,
I was just browsing through the uploads you did over the holidays – that's an awesome piece of work you did there! However, I stumbled upon some images, that look problematic:
- File:PZL-104_Wilga_80_YR-VIE_(6249324293).jpg
- File:PZL-104_Wilga_80_YR-VIE_(6249323191).jpg
- File:PZL-104_Wilga_80_YR-VIE_(6249850022).jpg
- File:PZL-104_Wilga_80_YR-VIE_(6249853278).jpg
- File:Tupolev Tu-95 Bear with Mig-15 URSS (6249849452).jpg
- File:Tupolev Tu-95 Bear with Mig-15 URSS (6249848718).jpg
- File:Tupolev_Tu-95_Bear_with_Mig-15_URSS_(6249320275).jpg
Those are screen captures from a flight simulator (they come frome the Flight Simulator screenshots album of curimedia), so the copyright does probably not belong to the flickr user – unless s/he did both the aircraft models and the scenery. Some of them are incredibly realistic (eg [4]), so there might be some more that I did not recognize from the thumbnail-view at the "recent uploads" gallery. I didn't nominate them for deletion yet … Greetings, --El Grafo (talk) 11:09, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for picking those up. Indeed, the FS screenshots are entirely realistic, and they did catch me offguard. I've deleted those. If you find anymore simply place them into Category:Files uploaded by Russavia (delete) and they will be bulk deleted. I do believe I've caught most of the Curimedia screenshots, but there might be the odd one still left -- they will be found as I progress going thru the uploads. Cheers, russavia (talk) 11:25, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- Well, that was quick ;-) --El Grafo (talk) 12:02, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
tl|duplicate
I added the tl|duplicate template to this file File:"City of Gasan,Marinduque.jpg".jpg 3 days ago and nothing has happened. Did I add it correctly? --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:52, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hiya, look at this diff to see how to add the duplicate to files correctly. Hopefully you see it before it's deleted. Cheers, russavia (talk) 11:55, 8 January 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks :) --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:57, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Embassy
Hi. I've seen your request a long time ago. Usually is far from my way. Today I´ve been very close but I forgot adress. In february I must go overthere. Let me see what I can do. Cheers. --Andrea (talk) 21:01, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
SDASM
The most air-cranes we've seen in a fire season
We had two visitors, 'Malcolm' (NSW RFS contract) and 'Elvis' (CFA contract). 'Malcolm' did some fire fighting in Wagga with the Oura fire and was relocated to the South Coast of NSW, so Victoria loaned its air-crane for the Tarcutta fire but ended up dealing with the Yass fire. - Nice Bidgee, hope you guys are in the realm of safety there? russavia (talk) 16:41, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
