Can you explain the rational on why these images are in the public domain? As far as I can tell they are from a book that was published with a copyright notice in 1930. I really hope you know something I don't because that book is great, but I can't see why it is PD.--BirgitteSB 23:33, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Ofo1.png. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Image:Biological classification L Pengo.svg

edit

Hi, Pengo. Do you have an unlabelled version of Image:Biological classification L Pengo.svg? If so, could you please upload it. I'd like to use it within Template:Annotated image, which has some big advantages: the text is just text, so translation to another language does not require a new version of the image; most images are typically used as thumbnails, and Template:Annotated image makes it easier to ensure that the text is legible at thumbnail size; wikilinks can be added without the hassle of imagemaps. See examples at Template:Annotated image/doc/Samples. Dutch Wikipeida is now using Template:Annotated image after I had a discussion with a Dutch editor, see for example Sjabloon:Mariene extincties. This way artists like you are freed of a lot of chores which can be handled by non-artistic editors like me.

I'd prefer a version with no boxes for the labels, as the boxes might cause problems at smaller sizes - I can add boxes by wrapping the level names in HTML SPAN tags with suitable background-color and border properties (I'm useless at art but OK with HTML and CSS). -- Philcha (talk) 09:52, 20 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Pengo!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Template:Pengo DECF

edit

As part of the GFDL 1.3 license migration project, I've edited Template:Pengo DECF to mark any files tagged with it as eligible for relicensing under CC-BY-SA-3.0. As you'd already multilicensed the files under CC-BY-2.5, I assume you probably have no objection to this. However, if you do, feel free to revert my edit and please see the links above for instructions on how to tag the files individually. Thank you for your contributions, and have a nice day. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 01:14, 3 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Create graphics for stubs?

edit

I created a couple of stub templates at en.wiki that could use a graphic similar to this one. (Its stub template on en.wiki can be seen here.) There is a file you created that has two graphics that would be perfect for the recently created stub templates, and I was wondering if you would create the Commons stub graphics from your large graphic and add them to the en.wiki stub templates when you get some time?

Your graphic. The stub templates requiring a graphic can be found here: Red alga and here: Brown alga.

If you don't have time, I will ask someone else to do so. The graphics are perfect for the stub templates, and I'm glad I came across them. Thanks for creating them. --Kleopatra (talk) 16:44, 26 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

I've added a note about the color choices in this image. (The same note applies to the other images in the series that use resistor color codes.) Specifically, the violet bands render more as pink than violet. I am unable to correct the images because Commons doesn't appear to recognize my SVG files. If you are able to correct the issue, please do. WikiDan61 (talk) 12:53, 13 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi @WikiDan61: The files were created in Inkscape, but if you're having trouble editing them you can just use a text editor. The colour in question is #ee82ee so you can search and replace that with another hex color code. It only appears twice in this file. Pengo (talk) 00:38, 14 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Pimelea spicata

edit

Hello Pengo,

Thanks for your fantastic images in commons.

In 2007, you uploaded three images labelled Pimelea spicata, photographed in the Australian National Botanic Gardens. One of those images was considered a "featured picture". Unfortunately, the images are of another endangered Australian plant, Zieria baeuerlenii. Possibly the two species were growing together in the Gardens and the labels were swapped, or poorly located. Pimelea spicata has tubular flowers with sparsely hairy sepals, whereas Zieria baeuerlenii has velvety, triangular sepals. You might also notice the similarity of the leaves in your images with those in the Royal Botanic Gardens article.

The images can stay as they are of course, but in the interest of accuracy, it would perhaps be better to request a move.

Best wishes to you. Gderrin (talk) 02:55, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
