Congressional district county map

edit

Hey can I ask where you source your county maps from? More specifically where did you get the county map for the GA-02 district map you made? NSNW (talk) 17:24, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

I got the GA-02 County map by using redistricter and putting a Georgia congressman district shapefile and then downloading the County boundaries in the district. You have to pay $8 for redistricter though. Tell me if you have any more questions. JosephBobilly (talk) 17:35, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Is this kind of method possible with other districting software like DRA? NSNW (talk) 18:46, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't think so JosephBobilly (talk) 22:38, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Regarding election maps

edit

Hello JosephBobily,

I came across this page after looking at the map of Pennsylvania’s municipalities in 1988’s presidential election.

I must say, that’s an incredibly impressive map.

You attributed the data to Harvard’s ROAD project if I’m not mistaken?

If so, do you know if that resource has presidential election data by municipality for Washington state prior to 2004, or for New York prior to 1992?

In particular, election results by municipality for the presidential elections of 1964-1988 would be a real find. Truckonout (talk) 22:27, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

The ROAD Database is for elections from 1984 - 1990 and for Ohio its 1984 - 1994. JosephBobilly (talk) 22:42, 6 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
So Washington state election precincts for 1984 and 1988 are included in there? Truckonout (talk) 03:55, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes JosephBobilly (talk) 14:56, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just downloaded the file for Washington that appeared on ROAD and have converted it into a .txt file, then gotten it into an excel file, and I downloaded the roadmap pdf too. Here is a link to the source:
https://dataverse.harvard.edu/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.7910/DVN/YCWYVV
By any chance would it be ok if I showed you the file somehow, and asked you to look at it to make sure I'm reading it correctly when I assess towns and precincts? In particular, I am curious about the 1988 presidential and gubernatorial elections in Washington state.
The 1988 presidential election is one of the closest in the history of Washington state, and the gubernatorial election by contrast is the most one sided gubernatorial or presidential election in Washington state since 1936. Truckonout (talk) 06:25, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Did you download the .por file? That one should be the most accurate and the election data should be at the end of the spreadsheet. JosephBobilly (talk) 06:27, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Alaska borough maps

edit

Hello. I noticed that you have uploaded shapefiles for historical borough/census area boundaries for Alaska over the decades. Thank you for doing that! I also saw that you posted a borough/census area map for the 1962 US Senate election, and I was wanting to know how you calculated the totals. I did the calculations myself a few months ago (before I believe you posted your map), but I got different percentages for many of the boroughs (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1962_United_States_Senate_election_in_Alaska_results_map_by_borough_and_census_area_(concurrent).svg ).

You will also notice that my map also has Bristol Bay borough on it, since it had been created by the time of the election in 1962. I'm currently working on creating borough shapefiles that accurately reflect intra-decade boundary changes, which I also compiled into a video a few years back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbzpNvfPrWU&t=2s .

Lastly, in case you ever plan on doing more borough estimations for other elections, cinyc9 has interactive precinct maps that could help in speeding up the process:
https://cinycmaps.com/index.php/state-maps/ak/ak-historic-elections-map (1960s)
https://cinycmaps.com/index.php/state-maps/ak/ak-historic-elections-map (1980s-2000s)
P.S. Keep up the great work with all of the maps you have added to Wikipedia! PrusBis6187 (talk) 06:54, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I got the precinct results from cinyc's map but i replaced my map with yours because i think it is more accurate since i was kind of tired when i was makinh it so probably didnt add up all the precincts correctly. JosephBobilly (talk) 13:42, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Did you split any precincts when making the map? PrusBis6187 (talk) 17:46, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
What do you mean JosephBobilly (talk) 18:18, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Since the precinct boundaries don't line up exactly with the borough boundaries, were there any precincts whose votes you roughly distributed across different boroughs? PrusBis6187 (talk) 19:03, 9 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

1972 US House Alaska borough map

edit

Hello again. I noticed that you made a borough map for the 1972 AK US House election. I just wanted to let you know that the boundaries you used for the election are not entirely accurate. The Newberry Library is normally quite detailed and accurate for county boundary changes, but, for Alaska, it only shows how the boroughs have changed at the start of each decade, even though boundary changes went on over the course of each decade. You can find a file with svgs of Alaska borough maps, including 1972, here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xhM8ISfVY4e7Cny-0V4Yzy688HXJBtJM?usp=sharing
the 1972 svg should also work through at least 1976, if not until 1980. PrusBis6187 (talk) 18:09, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Updated it with the correct boundaries JosephBobilly (talk) 19:08, 16 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Delaware maps

edit

Hey thanks so much for uploading the new state house maps for the last decades, could you also fix the 70s map? it was uploaded awhile back and the shapes look really bad with the clipping coastline, could you make them align with the county map like the others you made? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:US_Senate_1972_Delaware_by_State_House_District.svg Putitonamap98 (talk) 07:57, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is this good? File:US Senate 1972 Delaware by State House District.svg JosephBobilly (talk) 20:00, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just used an svg of delaware and put it over the house districts then used the clip tool in inkscape. JosephBobilly (talk) 20:01, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hey joseph srry for the late reply definitely better it's just the bottom right coast part doesn't align up exactly still if you could fix that that would be great but no big deal or rush. i do appreciate it. could i ask you about making some more historical county maps for other states using the v2 states with 810 px width? I have certain ones i need to be done to continue updating you don't have to color in each map i can do that i just need the base maps uploaded like you did for Maryland Putitonamap98 (talk) 07:28, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I could make historical county maps for other states I was already planning to do older maps of Maryland. Some states in newberry already have the same shapes as the standardized ones on Wikipedia. You just have to simplify geometries and make it 810 px width. If its not a coastal state it usually is similar to the v2 version of the state. I'll probably do older county maps of Virginia even though it seems to be the hardest one to do. JosephBobilly (talk) 16:08, 14 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hey thanks for uploading the new base maps for the old wyoming county bounds and appreciate you categorizing them on commons. can you update the south dakota pre 1953 to use the v2 simplified shapes? also if you can please these are the maps i need made so i can update the remaining us election maps, we're getting real close, it's been a two year project for me and i'd love to finish them,
idaho pre 1946
maine pre 1978
missouri pre 1950
montana pre 1978
nevada 1987 with bullfrog county and pre 1977
new jersey pre 1928
ny pre 1946
washington state pre 1970
once again really appreciate it Putitonamap98 (talk) 03:43, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I did nevada.but they're not 810x810. I can make them 810px if you want. I have finished some historical maps for montana but not all of them. I've only gotten to 1900 so far. Not sure about the other ones but I will try. JosephBobilly (talk) 03:51, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Montana is finished JosephBobilly (talk) 03:12, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
hey thanks so much again, i have been using your washington map almost got the map set finished, could you upload the pre 1915 map, and possibly all the 20th century tennessee county maps 810px? i will get to work on those map sets soon you do 104.160.97.110 08:50, 11 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Massachusetts Municipality SVG Files

edit

Hey there. Do you have the Massachusetts municipality svg files for elections pre 1916? Because I found the sources for the elections dating back to 1868 to be able to back a municipality map for them. Also, I really appreciate the work you did for the elections from 1916 to 1936. Map limitations really hindered me from doing any more of those maps. ZackCarns (talk) 03:20, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have town boundaries for the 1880s. I think it might last until somewhere in the lates 1880s and early 1890s. JosephBobilly (talk) 03:43, 24 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you have the municipality maps for the 1884 and 1888 elections available? Because I did 1892-1912 and can do the 1884 and 1888 elections as well. Hopefully, we can eventually do the 1868, 1872, and 1876 elections as well, as I have a source for those ones as well. ZackCarns (talk) 03:22, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
The 1880 map should also work with 1884 not sure about 1888 JosephBobilly (talk) 03:24, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay. I'll do 1884 tomorrow and then sort 1888 out later. ZackCarns (talk) 03:36, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just made an 1888 map the only difference between 1892 and 1888 was that west tisbury and tisbury was one town. JosephBobilly (talk) 03:38, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay. That's pretty easy to manage. I'll do both tomorrow then. ZackCarns (talk) 03:40, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I finished an 1876 Municipality map File:1876 Massachusetts Municipalities.svg 1872 might be tricky because boston boundaries were smaller and I would have to draw more towns. JosephBobilly (talk) 13:03, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay. I have the results down for 1884 and 1888. I'll do the results for 1876 tonight and do the maps for all three tomorrow. We can figure out 1872 and later 1868 later. ZackCarns (talk) 00:03, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have done those maps. Let me know whenever we have municipality maps for 1872 and maybe even 1868 and I can do those as well. ZackCarns (talk) 23:00, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
1872 is done File:1872 Massachusetts Municipalities.svg JosephBobilly (talk) 18:06, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay. I'll do 1872 tomorrow and get that done. ZackCarns (talk) 01:19, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
1872 is complete. ZackCarns (talk) 14:30, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you have maps available for Vermont for 1908 and for 1900 and earlier? Because I do have sources available and can do maps for quite a few Vermont elections once I get the maps for those years.
I can also do Connecticut as well, if maps are available for Connecticut too. ZackCarns (talk) 22:51, 23 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I will do connecticut JosephBobilly (talk) 17:07, 30 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I made connecticut maps if you want them https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1888_connecticut_municipalities.svg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1920_connecticut_municipalities.svg JosephBobilly (talk) 13:37, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay. I'll get started on the municipal maps for all of those elections. ZackCarns (talk) 18:32, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Connecticut from 1872 to 1908 is done. I spent most of last week making maps for Senate maps between 1916 and 1940 that weren't done yet, so I'll go back to doing that. Let me know if you get maps for either Connecticut pre-1872 or Vermont for 1908 and before and I can do those as well when and if they are available. ZackCarns (talk) 19:34, 4 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Would you be able to make South Dakota county maps for elections post 1920? That is the only state where the old borders are still used and there isn't any maps available to do update post 1920 elections there. ZackCarns (talk) 15:02, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
sure JosephBobilly (talk) 15:16, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay. Thanks! ZackCarns (talk) 17:00, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Is there a page on Our Campaigns that shows what new election data they have added? Because it seems there is, but I can't find it. Although, I could be wrong of course. ZackCarns (talk) 02:01, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
idk LeonEpik (talk) 03:13, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you have a list of the projections used for each state? I am able to create maps with historical boundaries in QGIS, but I am hitting a roadblock when it comes to the projection. I keep trying different ones, but it doesn't seem to be working. If I can figure out the projection, I would be able to make a lot of historical maps then. ZackCarns (talk) 01:53, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
What I usually do is export as shapefile put it into https://mapshaper.org/ then in the console do "-proj lcc" LeonEpik (talk) 12:39, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! That is what I was missing. I can make the maps now. ZackCarns (talk) 17:13, 4 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Is there an issue with the Louisiana zip file? Because I cannot get boundaries from before 1843 there for some reason and it's not because I am doing something wrong because I can do the same time frame for another state and it works fine, but it doesn't with Louisiana. ZackCarns (talk) 18:35, 20 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Since I have done all of the maps that I can, I am going back and I am going to do municipality maps for Massachusetts Governor elections pre 1940 that haven't been done yet. ZackCarns (talk) 18:19, 27 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Texas 1860 Map

edit

Can I ask what the source for your county map for Texas in the election of 1860 is? Image is here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1860_United_States_presidential_election_in_Texas#/media/File:Texas_Presidential_Election_Results_1860.svg

Usually most of the election images on the 1860 election aren't sourced, but all of the county data I have found and added to the pages matches up so it's usually fine. However, all of the county data I have found so far does not match the image, and instead I have only found partial results due to "a full return never being given" because of the civil war. Please provide the source as soon as possible or the map might need to be fixed to match up with the existing county data in sources such as the Tribune Almanac and Political Register of 1861. Zeusisloose417 (talk) 19:47, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PresidentialCounty1860Colorbrewer.gif I got it from this map JosephBobilly (talk) 20:52, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Okay thanks. It must be an issue with the sources or the map itself then. Zeusisloose417 (talk) 21:27, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Do you know of any other sources that might contain the full county data? Zeusisloose417 (talk) 21:47, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It could also be in United States Presidential Elections, 1788-1860: The Official Results by County and State - Michael J. Dubin. It is a book you might have to buy or find online. JosephBobilly (talk) 22:16, 3 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

1982 US House of Representatives Election

edit

Hello Leon, I was wondering if you could make up an SVG map for the 1982 United States House of Representatives elections. I planned on using it to chart out Congressional endorsements for the 1984 Democratic Presidential Primary race, but it is a tad difficult to determine some of the smaller seats with the PNG. I believe that it would be your '84 map, but with just minor changes in New Jersey, New York and California. Ariostos (talk) 21:47, 21 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
