Hello, Cullen328!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Files you uploaded may be deleted

edit

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged OTRS pending for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have already sent the permission, please re-send it to "permissions-commons wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. At the same time, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 02:08, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Frost images

edit

Hi. If you upload additional images by Mr. Frost, please put under "Permission" the following:
(see User:Cullen328)

While only OTRS agents are supposed to place the received template, the link to your userpage will identify the OTRS agent who logged the permission. This should eliminate concerns. If you have questions, please feel free to drop by en:User talk:Moonriddengirl. :) That also goes if you'd rather we place that notice somewhere other than your userpage. I've put it there for convenience, but it could go into user subspace as well. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:22, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category:Photographs by Tom Frost

edit

Hi, I was very pleased to discover that it is OK to upload images by Tom Frost. I was always a big fan of his climbing photos and think we should try to upload everything we can find. I assume that any of his photographs is OK to upload. The tricky part is figuring out which are his photographs. Do you know if all the photographs at http://www.frostworksclimbing.com/ThumbnailsA.htm are his? Thanks for securing OTRS. --Jarekt (talk) 18:11, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, those he is selling on his website are all his work. As I recall, he added that section to his website after I got his permission to upload his images to Wikimedia, but it was a blanket permission authorizing me as his agent in this matter to upload any of his images on his behalf. He is not a computer savvy guy. I am busy at the moment but will upload more images soon, and higher resolution versions of some that are already on Wikimedia. I think I scanned some out of books, and they aren't the greatest copies. If you find others that are indiputably Frost's, send them my way, and I will add them. If there is any doubt, though, we can't attribute an image to him without asking him to verify it. Hope this helps. Cullen328 (talk) 18:58, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
There is decent amount of classic images on the web attributed specifically him:
just to name a few. It might be good to scan photos from Sept 2010 Rock and Ice magazine. And just to make it clear, you are the only one allowed to upload his images, otherwise I would be eager to help. --Jarekt (talk) 20:15, 5 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Gladding McBean

edit

Dear Jim,

Thanks so much for keeping tabs on my family's little factory. Just wished to mention that my uncle McBean's first name was "Atholl" (not Athol as found in the information about the company's owners). For your amusement, let me mention that as a wee lass, I used to hug Uncle "Atholl", but, being a little girl with a lisp, his name didn't come out quite right. Give it a try. ;-)

All the very best to you and your family. Thank you, once again, for the fine historical work you've done.

Miss Arden (Newhall - McBean family of California)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

edit

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Hello, Ronhjones. This is not a photo of a "toy". It is a photo that I took of a scale model of a small ship on display in a museum. It is very similar to other photos in Category:Models of ships in the United States. Please clarify. Cullen328 (talk) 01:33, 2 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
It's a 3D model - it was made by someone, and they gained the copyright by making it. As for the category, I think that some are on borrowed time. A lot of them are external sources. Do ask at COM:VPC if you like. US museums do not get the Freedom of Panorama that can apply in many parts of the world. You can also leave a note on the talk page for the reviewing admin. Underhill

edit

Hey. You've been working on Commons for several years now, so I assume you understand why the provenance (and thus copyright release) on File:Robert L. M. Underhill.jpg is inadequate. Can you fix that? And, for that matter, can you double-check all the other images you uploaded from that era? Thanks. DS (talk) 13:31, 5 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello DragonflySixtyseven. I uploaded those photos when I was very new here. Glen Dawson had a website of his old mountaineering photos with an expansive but informal offer of free use. Back then, I thought that was adequate but now I know that it isn't. Dawson died in 2016 at age 103 so I can't ask him to formally license the photos, and his website no longer exists. So, please delete the four Dawson photos I uploaded on 18 September 2009. I think that two meet non-free content requirements on English Wikipedia and so I will upload them there instead. Cullen328 (talk) 21:51, 14 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
To clarify: did he take those photos? (Also, I'm not an admin, I can't delete them.) DS (talk) 02:42, 15 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
DragonflySixtyseven, who can say for sure about a series of photos taken in the wilderness back in 1931 when all the people involved are dead? I believe that the photos were mostly taken by Glen Dawson with his own camera, but that he handed his camera to one of the other climbers to take a photo of himself. The group photo was taken the day after the first ascent, with the same camera, by someone else who was almost certainly one of his Sierra Club friends. The negatives were lost for many years because Dawson had loaned then to another Sierra Club member who forgot to return them. They were recovered at a garage sale, eventually identified, and the photos posted on Glen Dawson's website. The guy who bought the negatives met with Dawson who was very elderly at that time, but was able to identify almost all of the people in the photos. Since you are not an administrator here, please feel free to nominate these four for deletion. Cullen328 (talk) 02:59, 15 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
For what it's worth, DragonflySixtyseven, Glen Dawson's daughter contacted me off-Wiki when Glen was still alive, to let me know that her father was well aware of the work I had done on Wikipedia biographies of him and his climbing partners, and she conveyed his appreciation and approval of my work. I never met Dawson but I spent two weeks climbing with his close friend Jules Eichorn in the Sierra Nevada in the late 1970s. So, he was a friend of a friend. Cullen328 (talk) 03:16, 15 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Actually, if you remember the URL of his site, I could check to see if it's on archive.org, and if so, maybe verify the exact wording of his statement. DS (talk) 06:05, 15 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

I do not recall the URL of his old website, DragonflySixtyseven. Cullen328 (talk) 06:42, 16 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Regarding my block on Wikipedia

edit

Hello Cullen328. I wanted to get in touch with you (not me) being an administrator of Wikipedia. Currently, I am blocked on Wikipedia for the following reason given by JzG: "flouncing to avoid scrutiny. I think we are done with this." To give you a rundown of what happened, I took an unhealthy interest on supporting infoboxes on every biographical article. I was harsh toward user Cassianto and threatened them to ANI, which I did. At this time, I claimed I was going to leave because of the embarrassment from the outcome of the first ANI report I filled. But, I realized what I did wrong and didn't. In an attempt to apologize, I tried contacting Cassianto on their talk page, but they deleted it. I went to the "Dispute Resolutions" page, and I unwittingly thought that ANI was a safe option to address an apology. After I embarrassed myself there again, I answered some things on my talk page and said I would leave. But, when I checked Wikipedia for something the next day, I found out that I got blocked. Here's my talk page on WP for more after that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:StrangeloveFan101.

I came to you to ask if I could be unblocked. I don't believe I didn't do anything wrong, because I did, and I apologized for everything I did. I want to come back and help edit pages again. I would like to continue working on existing articles such as the Blender Foundation's open movies and Rochunga Pudaite to name some, pages I started (such as Vader Episode I: Shards of the Past), and sandboxes and the draft I'm working on Baldi's Basics, the Obi-Wan Kenobi fan film, and Star Wars: Origins). I also want to keep my nose clean of anymore trouble and steer away from controversial topics within WP such as the whole infobox debacle. In short, I want to help and contribute again.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello, StrangeloveFan101. I am sorry but your post here on Wikimedia Commons is not appropriate. Any unblock request must take place on English Wikipedia and not on any other Wikimedia project. Cullen328 (talk)

Photos of Linden California

edit

Hello Mr. Heaphy, I'm currently working on a project that will be printed as a wall mural at a bank located in Linden California. A couple of Linden California photos currently posted from you on this site would be great to use, and even though you mentioned that your photos are 'free to use', I would like to confirm this before we proceed. As of now it's going through approval and has your photo credit on them.

If you would like to discuss further, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hello FMB California. Feel free to use my photos for your project. The only requirement is that you attribute the photos to me. Please let me know how the mural project goes. Good luck. Cullen328 (talk) 20:28, 5 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much Mr. Heaphy, and yes, both photos will display your photo credit! Once I get the bank's approval, I will let you know.

Jerry Blair

edit

Hi Jim, this is Greer I'm trying to edit the page for Jerry Blair. I don't want to step on toes or piss people off, but there were a bunch of people to contribute to blocking his page...I need some help as to what steps are next. When I sign in from my personal computer it's blocked me...I'm in an apartment complex and it says something odd about my IP address...I want to make changes, can you help me? I also reached out to Luk 3 and theroadislong but I'm not sure if y'all are getting my messages or if I'm even doing this correctly. Would you please help me? Thanks in advance Jim [email protected] — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2600:1000:B14E:7BCB:3DFA:F952:D19E:7F7C (talk) 09:58, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

If you want to discuss this, please contact me on English Wikipedia, not here. Cullen328 (talk) 17:28, 26 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
