Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Do you still have copies of the Pittsburgh-related statues that were recently deleted? I can get them back on wikipedia (but not commons) with a fair use rationale. I have done this several times w:User:TheZachMorrisExperience/FairUsePictures, so if you re-load them to regular wikipedia and inform me on my wikipedia talk page, I can make sure they are kept next time. --TheZachMorrisExperience (talk) 04:29, 23 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi Blackngold29! Bob Bobster (bobster855) on Flickr is known to upload files created by others, marking them with licenses that he has no legal right to release them under, and failing to credit the actual authors. The account is therefore listed as an unreliable source at Commons:Questionable Flickr images.
I have initiated a review of all files taken from this Flickr user that I could find. Since you uploaded one or more of those files to Commons, you may wish to comment at Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Bob Bobster on Flickr. It is possible that some of the files should be kept, but even most of the ones that may be okay to keep need to have their authorship, licensing and other information corrected. —LX (talk, contribs) 15:23, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:59, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Critically evaluate Flickr licenses
|
File:Johnathan Cheechoo celebration 2008.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid.
Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters. See Commons:Questionable Flickr images for a list of known bad Flickr users.

Notification about possible deletion
editSome contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
