Tell me that you'll open your eyes
edit@Armbrust: glad to break intellectual bread with you over Samuel B. Webb! Regarding your opinion and subsequent verdict:
"rename request declined: does not comply with renaming guidelines, it's Sam. M. Webb in the picture" |
Rest assured, this is not Sam. M. Webb in the picture but Samuel B. Webb, or Connecticut revolutionary war hero, brigadier general Samuel Blachley Webb, an aide-de-camp to George Washington at one time. That's how Henry Bryan Hall etched letter "B" in cursive in Blachley's signature. Everything goes to the dogs, and NYPL is not an exception because they can't even read cursive nowadays. If you have any doubt or question, please don't hesitate to consult Correspondence and Journals of Samuel Blachley Webb, Volume 1, Illustrations With best regards, --Taterian (talk) 01:00, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
- Well, if the image says it's "Sam. M. Webb", than it't perfectly acceptable in the file name too. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 10:39, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
- An interesting case for discussion, how about taking it to the village pump? --Taterian (talk) 07:57, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
Code numbers in file names
edit@ Armbrust,
thank you for the renamings!
- Nevertheless I had preferred to maintain the code numbers comprised in the previous file names (Now, keep them dropped. :)
- I ask for renamings relatively often.
- In photos taken by myself, I also use such codes, normally the last figures of the number, the photo had on the chip. :They make it easier to identify photos of large serieses, out of which I load up only a few.
- And in the co-operation of us wikipedians, I consider it a symbol of respect, to keep the code number used by the uploader, even if the rest of his file name wants correction or other improvement.--Ulamm (talk) 23:52, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
- Will pay more attention to keep them in the file name. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 10:38, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
File:Red Crowned Crane Closeup Profile (12072378424).jpg
editHallo, Armbrust. Wieso kann der Name nicht geändert werden? In den von dir zitierten Richtlinien heißt es "If an object or organism was incorrectly identified in the filename (such as calling a Sylvilagus floridanus by the name “File:Sylvilagus audubonii.jpg”), this criterion covers renaming the image."
User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 10:37, 18 February 2018 (UTC)
About a recent change
editHi, you recently renamed my file Argos-logo.png, would you be able to rename it Argos logo.png, I'm not able to do it because during the process , it says that the file name exist, but it was a file that I deleted, the name should be available technically. Thank you. Bill Wong (talk) 18:25, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
- Already done by Rzuwig. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 15:22, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
Misspelled proper nouns
editHi. In English, proper nouns are capitalized. If I write your name as "armbrust" this is wrong. Renaming guidelines speak clearly about "misspelled proper nouns". That is a "special" rule; what you refer to in your edit summary (not rename only for capitalizing) is a "general" rule. Regards. --E4024 (talk) 15:20, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- It would be rude, but not wrong. IMO. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 15:21, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
- BTW, I was talking about what the right decision should be, not about anything else. Anyhow. Bye. --E4024 (talk) 15:25, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
Important message for file movers
editA community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Non-existent word
editHello! Hard to understand your decision here. The word "crownprince" does not exist in the English language, nor in any other language that I know of. I thought correct English would be a good idea, and not spreading incorrect language an even better one. ??? --SergeWoodzing (talk) 19:47, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
- I just quoted COM:FRNOT#1. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 05:19, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- Which does not cover this. Does not cover words that do not exist. Such words should never be in file names. Answer what this is about, or not at all. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 22:28, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- COM:FRNOT#1 explicitly lists “TowerBridge'09.jpg” as something that shouldn’t be renamed, and that word doesn’t exist either. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 04:22, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- Irelevant. Not a person's (incorrect) title. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 23:34, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- Just because you say it’s irrelevant doesn’t make it irrelevant. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 04:30, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
- Of course not, but I don't think think you would find community support in using an obviously incorrect word as a person's title in a file name. Just because your have had mover rights for many years doesn't mean you don't make mistakes. Why don't we stick to topic: do you concede that the word "crownprince" does not exist? --SergeWoodzing (talk) 19:26, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
- Because your point is irrelevant with regards to the renaming criteria. Regards, User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 02:20, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

Renaming
editHi,
You denied several renaming request I made, based on the assumption that the files where not part of a set. They actually are : they all come from the federal assembly website, and are taken every new legislature. I would be much easier to have "Alain Berset (2008).jpg, Alain Berset (2015).jpg) than "Alain.berset.08.jpg" or "Ignazio Cassis(2).jpg"
Sorry if it's not really doable, not very familiar with commons procedures…
--Omnilaika02 (talk) 14:28, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- COM:FR#4 is for two cases generally: (1) Certain complex templates assume that the images used in them will follow a specific naming convention and Wikisource also uses a specific naming convention for the source files they transcribe. (2) Files that form parts of a whole (such as scans from the same book or large images that are divided into smaller portions due to Commons’ upload size restriction) should follow the same naming convention so that they appear together, in order, in categories and lists. These doesn't fit any of them. Regards, User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 14:37, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Is there any way to have this renaming done, to have something more clear ? Regards, — Omnilaika02 (talk) 14:44, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

City of Lincoln Nebraska flag 2022 permission evidence
editHi!
I see that you've flagged this file image here:...
File:City_of_Lincoln_Nebraska_flag_2022.png
...for deletion, because it is missing evidence for permission. It's been a while since I've had to go down this road, so please bear with me. According to the city website -- referenced on the file page, it states that:
"In the interest of fostering civic pride, the colors, design and theme of the City Flag of Lincoln may be creatively and enthusiastically promoted as an open-source design to be embraced throughout our City."... along with free hi-res image download links provided for such use.
...so... with the design being open source -- a.k.a. free to use, what kind of licensing permissions is needed / being looked for in this situation? If the above quoted line does not pass muster, then I would assume that the Mayor's office would need to email Wikimedia with a declaration of such free use?
Thanks much for any help and advice in advance! Hanyou23 (talk) 08:57, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- The file description page says it’s licensed as {{Cc-zero}}, but what you quote above isn’t the same. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 09:16, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, this Cc-zero licensing is new to me... been a while since I've uploaded to Wikimedia and I don't recall seeing it before. Don't mean to sound silly, but what licensing category would this fall under then (public domain or something similar)? New territory for me ;o ..... ^_^ Hanyou23 (talk) 09:45, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- I’m not sure about that. Also does “to be embraced throughout our City“ mean that it’s not applicable outside the city? User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 23:49, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- It's a good question that I was looking at also. I'm interpreting it as the citizens of the city embracing the design of the new flag as opposed to the old one, since most in the city didn't even know what the old one looked like (City Councilmen couldn't even find a place to buy one)... but then again, this is just my interpretation.
- I think I might reach out to the Mayor's Office for clarification -- hopefully before the file is deleted. Hanyou23 (talk) 00:01, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Wagens op het strand
editHi Armbrust. You declined this rename request [1]. This is not a 'wagen', but a 'kar'. A 'kar' has two wheels and a 'wagen' mostly four wheels. So that's typically Dutch. In Dutch this mistake is made often too. I have an 'old card collection', so I know this, and I know that user:Pelikana is a specialist in things like this. :-) - Greetings, - Richardkiwi (talk) (talk) 12:58, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- I only based my decision on the source of the image, which says it's called "Wagens op het strand, Anton Mauve, 1848 - 1888". Even if it's an error, it's certainly not an obvious one. User:Armbrust (Local talk - en.Wikipedia talk) 21:40, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
The Wings of the Altenberg Altarpiece (SM sg358-361)
editHi, you declined the renaming then file c:File:The Wings of the Altenberg Altarpiece (SM sg358-361) (cropped).png I requested. editWarum setzt du eine Verbesserung zurück????
--Hannes 24 (talk) 11:09, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi there, in the past (2011) you uploaded this bookcover to Commons. Are you sure there is no copyright on this image? Usually a bookcover is not allowed since it is a "creative work" by a designer. Can you explain your action? Kind regards, 07:09, 13 October 2022 (UTC) Saschaporsche (talk) 07:09, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

editHello! Thank you for your hard work! It was my request, but you put your names instead of my names. Why did you change the request? --Matsievsky (talk) 10:56, 16 November 2022 (UTC)

Greenland flag proposal
edithey there, thank you for moving the proposed flag of greenland to [:File:Proposed flag of Greenland (3rd Proposal).svg], however after requesting the move i've realised that the "3rd proposal" is also an ambiguous term, as this flag is dated to 1974 and could be renamed to "Proposed flag of Greenland (1974).svg". I should have realised this sooner but my main source also cited it as just the "3rd proposal". Could it be renamed again to the more appropriate name? Feitidede (talk) 03:23, 1 November 2024 (UTC)
