| Description |
Information plaque found by the ruins of the Upper Castle on Gediminas Hill in old town Vilnius: This castle, also known as Gediminas' Castle, is considered a symbol of Vilnius. Built at the beginning of the 14th century, and replacing an earlier wooden one, it withstood the attacks of the Crusaders. At the beginning of the 15th century, it was rebuilt, strengthened, and along with the Lower Castle, composed a powerful defensive complex. Eventually it lost its importance. After damage caused by the war with Moscow in 1655, it was not rebuilt. After WWII the best surviving tower was restored and now houses a museum, and an observation platform offers visitors an impressive panoramic view. To the east of the tower are the ruins of the ducal palace. |
