Ele nasce nas encostas do vulcão Maipo a 5.523 m.s. e cobre uma extensão de 250 quilômetros até que deságua no Oceano Pacífico, cobrindo uma superfície ligeiramente superior a 15.000 km². O rio Maipo dá origem à principal bacia hidrográfica da Região Metropolitana de Santiago (no Chile). Do ponto de vista da conservação da biodiversidade, a área andina do Cajón del Maipo foi proposta como área prioritária pela CONAMA no âmbito da Estratégia Nacional para a Conservação da Biodiversidade. |
