Description
English: Photograph of Old Shade Iron Furnace, near Johnstown, Pennsylvania ("beyond Windber"). Probably taken by James Alexander Klahre (1877-1963) in about 1905, from the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College - Klahre Collection. The date and author are based on the appearance of the photo (particularly the style of border) compared with other photos in the collection with known dates. The woman is Marie Ursula (Gerber) Klahre (1876-1954), wife of the photographer, with one of his children, Kenneth Klahre.

According to A Guide to the Old Stone Blast Furnaces in Western Pennsylvania, Part II by Myron B. Sharp and William H. Thomas (1965):

Shade Furnace, the first iron furnace in Somerset County, was built in 1807 or 1808 by Gerehart and Reynolds. It was operated by various owners until 1858, when it was blown out finally.
