Summary
editDescriptionJoining the two halves, 1991 (geograph 6541543).jpg |
English: Joining the two halves of Sheffield 74 at the National Tramway Museum, Crich, Derbyshire, UK. A key stage in the restoration of a double deck tram is the marrying of the lower and upper decks. For reasons of practicability, the two decks are constructed independently (this was always traditional practice). The procedure needed space for the upper deck to be craned onto the lower, so it was always done in the open, with a crane hired for the purpose. Sheffield 74 has been restored to represent the stage of tramcar development when enclosed top-decks were added to previously open-topped cars, in this case one that never had the top deck extended above the driver's platform. Diesel shunter 'GMJ' is being used to move the tram. |
