| Description | Model of 'York' Class Heavy Cruiser HMS Exeter, 8,390 tons displ., built at Devonport Dockyard, launched 1929, commissioned 1931. At Chatham Historic Dockyard, 3 March 2019. Although small for a Heavy Cruiser, HMS Exeter, with the light cruisers HMS Ajax and HMNZ Achilles, damaged to German pocket battleship Graf Spee at the Battle of the River Plate, forcing her to seek refuge in Montevedeo in neutral Uruguay and subsequently scuttling herself. The Exeter was very severely damaged in the action - and before Graf Spee fled to Montevideo her captain planned to ram her! Although repaired, the Exeter was herself sunk (with two destroyers) by gunfire and torpedoes from four Japanese Heavy Cruisers and four destroyers at the Battle of Sunda Straight, 1942. |
