Summary

edit
Description The pond had frozen over for the winter, but there was still a splotch of it that was still liquid on the surface. Ice floats on top of water and acts as a great insulator, so even though the top appears to be frozen, there's still liquid water underneath. This also explains why fish don't freeze to death.
