Description Original caption: "
Good byes were duly said and we started off on a well marked trail, beaten down by the Indians going to the Dance. As a rule it followed the shore line of the River but where there was a big bend in the River, a portage or short cut overland, was made.

On this trip we were both using “trail” snowshoes which are 3' 1/6 “ long. Hunting snowshoes are as long as a man is tall 5' 6” to 6 ft.

In some places, owing to the river bank being high and too steep to climb – we pitched our tent right on the ice, an easy matter when one knew how to do it.
