To differentiate this variation from the other I have recorded, this variant has 3 loopholes enabling 270 degrees of observation and fire. To the flank of this sangar are remains of an infantry battle trench that have been since filled in. Remains of black and green camouflage paint can also be seen on the exterior walls. It is constructed from concrete blocks with a cast concrete roof, and is semi-buried in the natural earth bank. Further protection has been added both from view and fire by revetting the walls with natural rock and gravel. The roof also has additional earth protection, and the entrance is protected by a short corridor dug into the earth and revetted with sandbags. Inside the sangar the roof has been treated with tar, presumably to help with weatherproofing. I don't believe this was part of the construction process of casting the roof in situ. A damp-proof layer has also been added at ground level; something I have not seen elsewhere. ============The airbase at RAF Mount Pleasant was announced in 1983 and subsequently opened in 1985 primarily as a fighter airbase on the Falkland Islands. Following the conflict in 1982 a small airbase was located at the only existing hard runway on the islands 27 miles wast at Port Stanley (RAF Stanley). As part of this military installation in what was a recent conflict zone, it was necessary to construct a number of field defences to ensure the security and protection of the airbase. It is likely these were constructed in the early days of the construction of the airfield and formed part of the defensive plan. The examples I have selected to record are beyond the current perimeter of the airbase and located immediately beside the civilian road. They all appear in a poor state of repair and I have assumed they are no longer maintained. They likely still form part of the outer line of field defences. |
