Description: In 1875 Fürst Johann II of Liechtenstein had the approx. 4,000 meters long ‘Liechtensteinklamm’ in St. Johann im Pongau, subsequently named after him, made through a donation accessible to the public by paths, railings and bridges.

The roaring and fast-flowing waters cut deeply into the limestone and slate rock layers. The surrounding rock underwent a slower erosion, so that a gorge up to 300 meters deep and at some passages only 3.5 meters wide was created.

The gorge itself can be divided into several areas: breakthrough, basin, dark gorge and another basin accessible through a tunnel. The final area is the 50 meters high ‘Schleierwasserfall‘, which is, however, of technical origin (overwater from the collection facility of a hydroelectric power plant located above).

The gorge offers an extraordinary atmosphere with its narrow rock walls, roaring water masses and the sparkling spray which forms a rainbow at midday when the sun shines.
